What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety is normal until it starts making decisions for you. When you turn down invitations, avoid phone calls, check things repeatedly, or lie awake running through tomorrow, the anxiety has stopped being useful information and become the thing in charge.

It takes different shapes. Generalised anxiety is constant low-level worry moving from one subject to the next. Panic involves sudden physical surges feeling like something is badly wrong. Social anxiety centres on being judged. Health anxiety fixes on the body. Each responds to therapy, and the approach depends on the shape.

CBT has the strongest evidence base for anxiety disorders and works by testing the predictions anxiety makes rather than arguing with them. Psychodynamic and integrative approaches look at what the anxiety is carrying and where it started, which often matters when it has been there since childhood. Somatic approaches work with the physical state directly. Many therapists combine them.

What to expect from anxiety therapy

An early session will map what the anxiety does: what sets it off, what goes through your head, what you do to make it stop, and what you have started avoiding. The avoidance list is usually longer than people realise until they write it down.

The work then moves towards facing what you have been steering around, in pieces small enough to manage. This is uncomfortable by design. The point is to find out what happens when you do the thing without the safety behaviour, because this is the evidence anxiety has been denying you. Alongside it you would work on the beliefs underneath, and on what the anxiety might be protecting you from. Many people notice a shift within six to twelve sessions, though anxiety present since childhood usually takes longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does anxiety therapy cost in Glasgow?

Private sessions in Scotland commonly run £45 to £90. Among the online therapists on this directory, fees start at £25.

Do I need a diagnosis to start?

No. Most people coming for help with anxiety have never been formally diagnosed and do not need to be.

Which therapy works best for anxiety?

CBT has the strongest research support for anxiety disorders. If anxiety has been part of your life since childhood, or sits alongside difficult early experiences, a psychodynamic or integrative approach is often a better fit. Ask a therapist how they would work with your particular pattern.

Will therapy make my anxiety worse before it gets better?

Facing avoided situations raises anxiety in the short term. A good therapist paces this with you rather than pushing. If it feels like too much, say so and the pace changes.

Can therapy help if I am already on medication?

Yes. Therapy and medication are frequently used together, and one does not rule out the other. Any change to medication is a conversation with your GP or psychiatrist.

Does online therapy work for anxiety?

Yes. For some people with social anxiety or panic, starting from home is what makes beginning possible at all.
