Understanding LGBTQ and gender
Anxiety and depression are among the most common mental health challenges, yet they can feel deeply personal and isolating. They can affect your mood, thoughts, behaviours, and even physical health. Anxiety might manifest as excessive worry, restlessness, irritability, or panic attacks, while depression often brings persistent sadness, lack of motivation, fatigue, and a sense of hopelessness.
Why LGBTQ+ & gender-affirming therapy matters
For many LGBTQ+ individuals, therapy is not just about mental health—it’s about finding a space where you can be your authentic self without fear of judgment, misunderstanding, or bias. Gender and sexual identity can influence many aspects of life, from relationships and self-esteem to career choices and personal well-being. Having a therapist who truly understands the nuances of these experiences is invaluable.
Common reasons people seek LGBTQ+ or gender-affirming therapy include:
- Exploring and affirming gender identity
- Navigating the coming out process
- Coping with discrimination, rejection, or societal pressures
- Addressing LGBTQ+ relationship and intimacy challenges
- Managing anxiety, depression, or self-esteem concerns related to identity
- Processing past trauma, including homophobia, transphobia, or family rejection
- Seeking support for gender transition, including social, medical, or legal aspects
- Addressing internalised shame and self-acceptance
No matter where you are in your journey, a supportive and knowledgeable therapist can help you feel seen, heard, and validated.

My approach is grounded in person-centred values, with influences from Gestalt, solution-focused work, and Internal Family Systems (IFS), allowing me to adapt flexibly to each client’s needs. My experience has taught me the importance of a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship, and I aim to create a safe, attuned space where clients can explore their thoughts, emotions, and patterns at their own pace. Deciding to give counselling a try is a big, and perhaps, daunting step. Finding someone who you don’t know but with whom you will be sharing personal, often intimate, thoughts and feelings can feel scary. How to go about this difficult task? The first step is to find a person who you feel you might be able to work with as well as being a counsellor with a professional profile appropriate to your needs. Counselling can be a challenging experience and feeling safe and able to trust your counsellor is essential if it is to be helpful. Next arrange an exploratory meeting, see how it feels and be guided by your own feelings. I can offer you a first session together with no obligation for you to continue. This should enable you to get a better feel of whether we could work together. For me, counselling is a partnership with two people trying to understand and respond to one person’s difficulties and concerns. I am usually able to be helpful people of all heritages. I have worked in an NHS, voluntary sector and private sector settings and I am experienced in helping with many kinds of difficulties, whether individuals or couples. Counselling whether short or long term can enable you to understand yourself better and develop new insights that can help you find a way ahead to a more contented way of living.

Elle Robertson
Hi, I’m Elle. I’m an experienced therapist, who specialises in working with adults in their 20’s and 30’s who are feeling stuck. London is a great place to live in lots of ways, but it can come with a load of social and professional pressure. Living here, it can easily feel like you’re not where you ‘should’ be in one area of your life or another. It can also be a place where it feels like people don’t always have the time or head space to properly listen to you, when they ask how you are. Therapy should be a place where once a week, you can talk to someone who will listen intently to what you have to say and give you the opportunity to really make space for yourself, with the support of someone who is trained in resourcing you to deepen your self awareness. This often comes from asking open questions, offering new perspectives and gently challenging narratives that you hold for yourself that might be holding you somewhere you no longer belong.
Wendy Eastwood
I have over 25 years’ experience of supporting individuals and families in a variety of settings, including Great Ormond Street Hospital, Camden Youth Offending Service, a leading visible difference & disfigurement charity Changing Faces, as well as private practice. Through working with individuals from many different backgrounds I see it as important to work with a person’s social and cultural context, and how different parts of a person’s identity come together. With the use of gentle questioning and offering my own reflections during our conversations we will work together to help you gain a new understanding. I will bring my curiosity and patience in helping you to make sense of and connect with yourself and with the world around you. Sessions will be unique to us and the relationship we build together. Whether you are new to counselling or not, the sessions may feel challenging at times, there will be moments of discomfort but there will also be moments of surprise and relief, possibly joy, as you understand and discover more about yourself. I am experienced in working with a wide range of issues, including but not limited to: Identity, Body Image, Loss/Bereavement, Trauma, Relationships/Dating, Anxiety, Depression, Obsessional Thinking/Behaviour, Confidence and Self-worth.

You may be seeking counselling because you are feeling worried all the time; or you feel unable to experience enjoyment – you are more tearful than usual, or you feel “flat” or “low”. This might be for any number of reasons: You might have experienced an adverse life event or a change in circumstance, such as a bereavement, the end of a relationship, the loss of a job or the new diagnosis of a health condition. You may be feeling stressed at work or at university, or overwhelmed with caring responsibilities, or experiencing difficulties in your friendships, in your primary relationship or in your family of origin. Or you may simply feel “stuck” but not know why. Perhaps you have faced difficulties or had trauma in the past – you were bullied at school, you were involved in an accident, or there were problems within the home. You may have experienced abuse or neglect. Together we will seek to understand how your experience has shaped the way you think about things, or feel about yourself, and how these may be holding you back in the present. As your self-awareness grows, so will your ability to make positive changes to your life. Whether you are facing one of these issues or another that’s not listed, or you simply want to talk to someone outside of your day-to-day life in order to gain a different perspective, my aim is to support you as best I can. Whatever your reason for reaching out for help, I am available either in person or by video, to talk it through with you.

My clinical training includes an MSc (Distinction) in Humanistic Psychotherapy, with experience across NHS crisis services, higher education, and specialist counselling settings. Tom Laverton
Therapy for people who feel the pressure to hold everything together, but are starting to feel the strain of doing it alone. You might look like you’re coping on the outside, but inside feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck in a way that’s hard to explain. I work particularly with people — often men — who carry responsibility and find it hard to share what’s going on. I offer a steady, confidential space to talk honestly, without pressure or judgement. In-person in Petersfield and online across the UK. I support adults experiencing anxiety, burnout, grief, and life transitions, as well as those seeking deeper self-understanding. Therapy offers space to make sense of patterns, emotions, and experiences shaping your present. My work is integrative, drawing on humanistic, psychodynamic and transpersonal approaches. In practice, this means a relational, grounded way of working that explores both what’s happening now and the deeper patterns beneath the surface.

Alongside counselling, I also offer conscious connected breathwork, which can support emotional regulation, self-awareness and deeper processing. Sessions can be tailored to include talking therapy, breathwork, or a combination of both. I offer online therapy, in-person sessions in South London, and outdoor walk and talk therapy in nature.

Sarah Lee
If you look put together on the outside, but your low self-confidence, self-esteem problems, or perfectionism make life feel harder than it should I can help. I teach people to see what’s happening and how to change their patterns even if therapy hasn’t worked before. I work with people who describe themselves as outwardly successful or high achieving but who still feel like something is missing. This shows up as anxiety, panic attacks, relationship issues, family issues even when they’re often competent and doing well at work. The mismatch can be confusing and embarrassing and mean people find it hard to articulate what’s wrong.

Emma Edwards
As a Counsellor I have worked with a variety of issues, especially those related to bereavement and loss. The experience of grief for many people can be hard to share with loved ones and be quite isolating. So often the focus of our work here, is to create an empathic space where your feelings can be shared, heard and validated. I have also completed additional training around pregnancy loss. As for many, pregnancy loss can be a upsetting and traumatic event, however often the experiance of this grief is more likely to be hidden, and isolating My professional background is working in social care and as a social worker, such, I have always had a passion for supporting people – especially those experiencing complex physical healthcare needs, and their carers and families, Also working in these environments has also given me a good understanding of the pressures that fast-paced highly-stressed workplaces can place on an individual’s wellbeing leading to stress and burnout.

Olivia Easter
Many of the people I work with come to therapy feeling exhausted from holding it all together. They might be living with anxiety or depression, struggling with low self-worth, navigating infertility, relationships, loss, or a deep sense of confusion or isolation. Often, there’s a sense of being overwhelmed by life, or of feeling left behind, behind schedule, or out of sync with others. I have a particular passion for working with people in their twenties and thirties. This can be such a transitory and tender time full of possibility, pressure, comparison and change. You might be asking yourself big questions: Who am I becoming? Am I doing life “right”? Why does everyone else seem to have it figured out? Therapy with me can offer you a place to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with yourself amidst all of this. Together, we can explore what’s been weighing on you, what might feel stuck or confusing, and what you long for beneath the surface. Therapy can help you make sense of your feelings, develop greater self-awareness, and build a more trusting relationship with yourself. Over time, this can support you to live in a way that feels more aligned, authentic and meaningful. Prior to beginning my private practice, I gained extensive professional experience working in a variety of environments, including nonprofit organisations and Greater London mental health community services. I’ve also gained rich experience through volunteering for the crisis service line SHOUT, the UK’s first and only free, confidential, 24/7 text service for those suffering with poor mental health. This experience has given me the opportunity to work with a diverse range of individuals across a broad spectrum of concerns. I hold a postgraduate advanced diploma in Humanistic Psychotherapeutic Counselling from the Metanoia Institute in London. I hold the Certificate of Proficiency from BACP. I hold an undergraduate degree in Philosophy (International) from the University of Leeds. I am a registered member of BACP, I am a trainee member of UKCP and I am a member of the Metanoia Institute. Carina Tudor-Sfetea
I’m an experienced, yet very human BABCP-accredited CBT therapist specialising in working with high-achievers with low self-esteem, high-functioning anxiety, or OCD, including autistic and ADHD folks, as well as LGBTQIA+ folks. I use evidence-based approaches – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), but really from an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness perspective (I’m also a mindfulness teacher) – so if you’ve tried CBT before and haven’t really connected with it, I might be your person. Maybe your life looks great, but inside you feel inadequate and like you’ll be ‘found out’. Anxiety, intrusive thoughts, overwhelm; feeling stuck, not good enough; overpreparing, procrastinating, checking; it may all actually be a fear of failure. My approach? Challenge what’s unhelpful while honouring your experiences and unique brain – so you unhook from the “there’s something wrong with me” loop and live your truth. We’ll work with the anxiety, intrusive thoughts, overwhelm, procrastination, overthinking, but also with what’s underneath – expectations, fear of failure or vulnerability, of being found out. We’ll both explore deeply and use active interventions to get you to a place where you don’t just survive, but really live your life. This may look like less noise, overthinking, or limiting yourself; more peace, balance and understanding – and knowing, deep down, that you’re enough.
Dr Anne Li
I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with over 14 years of clinical experience across the NHS and private practice. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society (CPsychol). I work primarily with high-performing professionals — across finance, law, technology, and the creative industries — who are navigating significant internal pressure beneath outward success. Common areas of work include burnout, perfectionism, anxiety, identity, and relationship patterns, as well as questions of meaning and direction at points of transition. Before retraining as a psychologist, I worked in investment banking and the creative industries. This background informs my understanding of high-pressure professional environments, and the particular ways in which difficulty can go unacknowledged within them. I work online, seeing clients across London and internationally.
