Understanding LGBTQ and gender
Anxiety and depression are among the most common mental health challenges, yet they can feel deeply personal and isolating. They can affect your mood, thoughts, behaviours, and even physical health. Anxiety might manifest as excessive worry, restlessness, irritability, or panic attacks, while depression often brings persistent sadness, lack of motivation, fatigue, and a sense of hopelessness.
Why LGBTQ+ & gender-affirming therapy matters
For many LGBTQ+ individuals, therapy is not just about mental health—it’s about finding a space where you can be your authentic self without fear of judgment, misunderstanding, or bias. Gender and sexual identity can influence many aspects of life, from relationships and self-esteem to career choices and personal well-being. Having a therapist who truly understands the nuances of these experiences is invaluable.
Common reasons people seek LGBTQ+ or gender-affirming therapy include:
- Exploring and affirming gender identity
- Navigating the coming out process
- Coping with discrimination, rejection, or societal pressures
- Addressing LGBTQ+ relationship and intimacy challenges
- Managing anxiety, depression, or self-esteem concerns related to identity
- Processing past trauma, including homophobia, transphobia, or family rejection
- Seeking support for gender transition, including social, medical, or legal aspects
- Addressing internalised shame and self-acceptance
No matter where you are in your journey, a supportive and knowledgeable therapist can help you feel seen, heard, and validated.

I bring a versatile and personalised approach to our sessions, drawing from different therapeutic approaches . This allows me to tailor our sessions specifically to meet your unique needs and personal goals. I work both in person and online. My in-person sessions take place in Shoreditch, East London, in a private and confidential setting. We can work short-term, medium-term, or long-term, depending on what feels most helpful for you at this time. Sessions last 50 minutes and can be held once per week, or bi-weekly. Hi, I’m Laura. I offer a warm, collaborative space where you can feel heard, understood and accepted as you are. You might be feeling overwhelmed, constantly on edge or like you’re holding everything together for everyone else. Maybe you struggle to feel seen in relationships, find yourself replaying conversations in your head, wondering what other people think, or feel like you’re never quite “good enough”? You don’t have to keep carrying this on your own. Therapy with me is a space where we can gently explore what’s going on for you, at your pace, in a way that feels safe and supportive. Are you someone who always puts others first, only noticing how worn out you are when you reach breaking point? We can also explore how you feel within your family or relationships in your life, giving time for your boundaries and needs to be processed with the respect you deserve, allowing you to live authentically and fully which builds self-trust and confidence. Through therapy, we can explore your needs together, supporting you to reconnect with yourself, your values, and your voice and helping you move forward at your own pace.

We all have moments where life feels overwhelming; times when you can’t see the wood for the trees. When you’re caught in the middle of a difficult season, it’s hard to know which way to turn or what even matters most. My goal is to provide a calm, non-judgmental space where we can step back together. By gaining a bit of distance and perspective, we can begin to clear the path forward, helping you reconnect with the bigger picture of your life.
Simon Wilson Stephens
Is life leaving you feeling directionless, anxious, and in need of guidance and support? Maybe you lack energy and find it hard to motivate yourself at work or move forward in your relationships? Despite everything you know already and all your best efforts, you feel more stuck, confused and frustrated than before. How would it be to find a way through this? My role as a therapist is to walk with you through an empowering journey of self-exploration, reflection and growth. To provide support for you to transform anxiety, stress and depression, navigate life transitions, identify and heal trauma, find a route to recovery from addiction, or create healthy relationships with family, friends and yourself. One-to-One Therapy can provide a safe and validating space to understand and process your fears, recognise your resources and strengths, and build resilience so you can become your best self. Carefully balancing what is introspective and real, we can work together in a collaborative relationship to uncover the obstacles in your way, nurture the natural energy within you to overcome them, and build a vision for you to create the life you want to live. An authentic life where your needs are met, you feel fulfilled, and you flourish. You experience self-actualisation. Though this may seem hard to see from where you find yourself now, with curiosity, courage, and at times hard work, the challenge of exploring within yourself to discover your real purpose can be invigorating and deeply rewarding.

I use solution focused approaches, equipping clients with powerful tools that empower them to make value based choices time and time again. My aim is to work towards a marked sense of well-being and increased contentment with greater effectiveness in all aspects of your life. I have a deep knowledge of a range of mental health issues including depression, anxiety, burnout, narcissistic abuse, trauma and a variety of health conditions. Typically, in no more than 6, 50min sessions, clients overcome something which is troubling them. You might be navigating life as someone who’s always felt a little outside the mainstream, queer, neurodivergent, or both. Perhaps you’ve had a late ADHD or autism diagnosis and are trying to make sense of what that means for your identity and your history. Maybe you’re in a relationship structure that doesn’t fit the standard mould, or you’re exploring your gender and struggling to find a therapist who genuinely gets it rather than just tolerates it. I work with adults across the UK online, specialising in LGBTQ+ identities, ADHD, autism, and AuDHD. I understand the particular weight that comes with holding several marginalised identities at once, the minority stress, the intersecting pressures, the exhaustion of navigating a world not built with you in mind. I’m kink-aware and polyamory-friendly, and I work from a place of lived experience, not just professional training.

I have a wealth of knowledge about child and adolescent development as well as over 18 years of experience of working with young people (up to the age of 25) and their families. Areas that I work with cover the normal struggles of adolescent development including, gender, identity and independence. As well as school refusal, self-harm and the impact of divorce/separation and grief on the family dynamics. No problem is too small or to inconsequential to be thought about. I aim to provide a safe and confidential provision that allows one to feel listened to and experience validation. I also think about the unconscious patterns of relating that get acted out whether that be with the child or young person or within the wider family that can impact how young people relate to each other and or their family members and peer group. I am also able to work with parents in a non judgemental way to help you support your adolescent to grow, develop and repair family disharmony. I also have experience with care experienced and young people at boarding schools. It all begins with a open conversation.

Together, we can being to make sense of what you are going through and find a way forward at your own pace.
Ryan Hegarty
You may know what you want to change, but not how to change it. Lasting change requires more than self-awareness – it only happens if we identify the specific factors maintaining the problem. Together, we identify what is keeping you stuck, use a clear psychological framework to understand how these factors interact, and apply evidence-based strategies to produce meaningful change. Less talking for the sake of it. More doing.
Asselle Seitmagzimova
I offer a warm, holistic approach to therapy for sensitive, deep-feeling people who want to understand themselves more compassionately and heal at the root. Using Internal Family Systems (IFS), embodiment, and compassionate enquiry, I help clients gently explore the underlying patterns, wounds, and protective parts that may be keeping them stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or self-critical. I’m especially drawn to working with people who have spent much of their lives feeling misunderstood, emotionally alone, or responsible for holding everything together.
Patricia Marcos Martinez
I’m Patricia, an integrative psychotherapist, sandplay therapist, supervisor and trainer based in London. I specialised in work with adults in their 20s and 30s, expats, adolescents and parents both online and in person in London. I offer therapy in English, Spanish and Catalan. My way of working is warm, transparent, creative and trauma-informed. I believe the foundation of therapy is feeling safe in the space and in the therapeutic relationship, this meaning that when we feel seen and valued by another person, healing naturally unfolds. I bring together different approaches such as psychodynamic, person-centred, attachment-based, transpersonal and neuroscience-informed and adapt them to suit each person. Sometimes we’ll work with words, sometimes with creativity, the body or what happens between the therapeutic relationship, whatever helps you connect more deeply with yourself. Therapy can be a place to breathe, to make sense of your story, and to rediscover what makes you feel alive and at peace Some of the common issues I work with • Anxiety and stress • Low mood and depression • Self-doubt and low confidence • Perfectionism, procrastination and burnout • High achiever pressure • Overthinking and self-criticism • Life choices and career issues • Bereavement • ADHD and ASD • Relationship difficulties and family conflicts • Adjusting to major life transitions • Childhood trauma or loss • Parenting challenges • Family transitions: divorce, illness, arrival new siblings • Expats and migratory grief • Third Culture people or nomadic childhood • Cross-cultural identity and belonging
Dr. Leah Jameson
There is no bar of entry for therapy. It is not a trauma olympics. You do not need multiple or extreme experiences to “qualify” for support from a specialist psychologist. Your child self did what it needed to do to get you here. It survived something deeply difficult, a betrayal, and now part of you may want to minimise, forget, or suppress what is still being triggered in the present. I understand the confusion that can come with this. The gaps in childhood memory, or the opposite, remembering too much. The flashbacks. The sights and sounds that feel immediate and real. These are different sides of the same trauma response. Your child self adapted to survive. Now you are left trying to live with the impact. What you bring to therapy matters. These were negative sexual experiences that happened during your most vulnerable stage of life. They happened when you were a child. I will not ask you to forgive or forget. Your child self has already done enough of that to survive. What I offer is a space where you can remember safely, and begin to process what has been held for so long.

At times we can feel overwhelmed by what is happening in our lives, and within our relationships, a situation can become overtime intolerable, or we may want to make some changes. Choosing to start counselling is a recognition that someone may be able to help, instead of struggling to deal with the issues alone. There may have been a recent crisis, however sometimes it can be difficult to identify the reasons why we feel unhappy, and at these times talking to a counsellor in confidence can be beneficial and enlightening. Together we can work towards identifying patterns of feelings, thoughts and behaviour which may be contributing to your current difficulties. Collaboration Sometimes we need help to access our resources and capacities in order to deal with our problems. I work collaboratively, and together we will explore your experiences in order to bring deeper understanding to your way of relating and responding. This offers an opportunity to recognise and manage your feelings and behaviours.
Dr Elisabetta Romani

You may lead a good enough life, but still feel the desire to change certain aspects which are causing you some distress. In a warm and non-judgemental space I will listen to you very carefully and help you uncover meanings, whilst reflecting on your patterns and choices.

I work in a warm, honest and collaborative way, adapting sessions to your individual needs rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach. I can help by offering a steady, compassionate space where you don’t have to hold everything together on your own. Grief can feel messy, exhausting, or confusing, and you may not even have the words for what you’re feeling — that’s okay. Together, we’ll gently explore your emotions, your memories, and the impact this loss has had on your day‑to‑day life. I’ll support you to understand what you’re carrying, make room for what matters, and find small, practical ways to cope that feel manageable and kind. My role isn’t to rush you or “fix” your grief, but to walk alongside you as you make sense of your experience and begin to reconnect with moments of steadiness, meaning, and hope.
James McWilliams

Whatever your focus, it will be a privilege to act as your guide on your journey towards understanding yourself more wholeheartedly.

The way we suffer is always singular, shaped by our histories, relationships, and experiences. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy begins from the idea that there is a stake in the particular forms our suffering takes, even if its meaning is not immediately clear to us. You may be seeking therapy for many different reasons: trauma, anxiety, depression, addictions, difficulties in relationships, or questions around sexuality and desire. Sometimes the problem is harder to define — the repetition of a painful pattern, a sense of being stuck, or a feeling that something is not quite right. Rather than promising quick fixes or applying standardised interventions, psychoanalytic therapy is grounded in a particular kind of listening, one that invites you to speak openly about what troubles you in a non-judgemental, safe setting, giving room to thoughts or experiences that may not have found expression elsewhere. Through this process, therapy can open the possibility of relating differently to yourself and others, loosening the hold of repetitive patterns, and making space for meaningful and lasting change.
Rachel Milroy
People seek therapy when they are dissatisfied or unhappy and feel that it is possible to make changes but this is very difficult alone. Psychotherapy is a particular type of conversation exploring thoughts, feelings and relationships. Psychotherapy offers the opportunity to think about what is troubling in a safe setting to understand and improve relationships, both with ourselves and others. My thinking and approach places relationships at the heart of experience. When patterns in relationships can be understood we can feel liberated to change.
Lola Borg
If you need to speak to someone, I’m a qualified, experienced therapist and counsellor with practices in Hackney and Marylebone. People reach out for many different reasons – it might be depression, anxiety, addictive or compulsive behaviour, trauma, loss, relationship or family problems. Sometimes people need to make sense of one particular event or crisis, such as a bereavement, but often what brings them to therapy can be a feeling of hopelessness, despair or sadness that they can’t make sense of alone. Or it could be that they feel stuck – in life or relationships. I see clients in person and via Zoom.

Joe Druce
I am a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and MBT therapist who works both in the NHS and in private practice. In the NHS I work as a senior clinician in both a complex emotional needs pathway and within a perinatal mental health team. In my private practice I offer individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy to adults from once a week or more frequently, both online and in person. I currently only have vacancies for in person therapy. I also offer parent infant work, which supports people in their transition to parenthood, either pre or post childbirth. After birth this involves working with parents and babies together until the children are two years of age. In conjunction with experienced colleagues, I offer a private Mentalisation Based Therapy programme. This involves weekly individual sessions alongside a weekly online therapy group. This is suitable for people struggling with complex interpersonal difficulties and difficulties regulating their emotions, potentially including impulsivity, anger, self-harm and suicidality. I have a particular interest in supporting people within the LGBTQ+ community. I am also interested in the way that societal pressures and systemic power structures influence our experience of ourselves and our mental health. Issues of inequality, racism, misogyny, homophobia and transphobia continue to shape the world in which we live. I aim to offer an inclusive space to everyone I work with, to enable them to make sense of how these influences might impact their individual emotional lives.
Daniel King
In an increasingly complex and uncertain world, it is no surprise that many people find themselves overwhelmed by anxiety, low mood, or a persistent sense of unease. When emotions become difficult to manage, it is natural to fall into cycles of negative thinking or to rely on ways of coping that ultimately leave us feeling stuck. Through my work within the NHS and across a range of counselling and therapeutic services, I have supported individuals and couples in navigating these experiences and creating meaningful change. My approach combines a thoughtful, collaborative space to talk with a focus on understanding patterns, developing insight, and building practical, lasting shifts. Therapy is not solely about addressing crisis or difficulty. It can also be a place to pause, reflect, and reconnect with a deeper sense of clarity and direction. A space in which you are not only listened to, but genuinely understood and where new possibilities can begin to take shape. Research consistently shows that the majority of people experience a significant improvement in both wellbeing and quality of life through counselling. This reflects what I see in practice every day: with the right support, change is not only possible, but often closer than it first appears.

Welcome. If you’re reading this then I imagine something in your life feels too hard to face alone. Maybe it’s a difficult relationship? A stressful work life? Some painful family dynamics? Or perhaps you’re feeling overwhelmed by past events and patterns that seem to keep repeating themselves? Whatever you’re struggling with, therapy is a place to be fully heard, understood, and supported; where your inner world can be expressed without fear or shame. A safe space where you can make sense of what you feel including the emotions you have learned to suppress and the things you are carrying alone. Navigating your way through a difficult time on your own can feel daunting, but I can help you overcome your challenges with kindness and at a pace that feels comfortable for you. With empathy and a grounded presence, together we can explore what has happened, sift through the residual thoughts & feelings and then find a way forward that works for you. I work from a place of acceptance and compassionate understanding to help you restore balance and build a happier life experience through increased inner awareness and self-empowerment.

Deciding to give counselling a try is a big, and perhaps, daunting step. Finding someone who you don’t know but with whom you will be sharing personal, often intimate, thoughts and feelings can feel scary. How to go about this difficult task? The first step is to find a person who you feel you might be able to work with as well as being a counsellor with a professional profile appropriate to your needs. Counselling can be a challenging experience and feeling safe and able to trust your counsellor is essential if it is to be helpful. Next arrange an exploratory meeting, see how it feels and be guided by your own feelings. I can offer you a first session together with no obligation for you to continue. This should enable you to get a better feel of whether we could work together. For me, counselling is a partnership with two people trying to understand and respond to one person’s difficulties and concerns. I am usually able to be helpful people of all heritages. I have worked in an NHS, voluntary sector and private sector settings and I am experienced in helping with many kinds of difficulties, whether individuals or couples. Counselling whether short or long term can enable you to understand yourself better and develop new insights that can help you find a way ahead to a more contented way of living.
